Maybe was the one-act play that Emily directed for her Directing II course. She also sound-designed the twenty-minute play, relying on sound to establish location in the absence of access to set pieces. Emily enjoyed both designing and directing this quirky little show.
Sound Library
This was a sound cue used very often in the show, as Maybe is the story of two individuals outside of an apartment building, waiting to be let inside and frequently buzzing upstairs. Emily looped the buzz sound in Qlab so it was infinite, and the SM took a visual of the actors touching the buzzer prop as the cue to start the effect, and similarly she took the visual of them taking their hands off the buzzer to cue the stop. This allowed the actors to control the comedic timing and length of the buzzer's audio.
This was the soundscape of a large city at night which underscored the entire twenty-minute one-act. Emily timed it so that certain sirens corresponded with moments of tension in the script, not so precise as to necessitate being their own cues but simply as a subtle symbolism of the deterioration of the protagonists' relationship.
